Puppy class

Kell and I got a 4 month old, spayed female, Labrador Retriever/Border Collie puppy named Lilly from a local no-kill shelter called Family Dogs NW on Saturday 30 December. Since we have not had the best luck with dog acquisition I did not want to talk about it and jinx it. I am amazed at Lilly's progress especially since she has only been with us for 5 days.

This morning Lilly went to the vet for the first time. Reports indicate she was remarkably well behaved on her visit, got her second set of puppy shots, and came home with a clean bill of health. Tonight Lilly and I went to our first "Good Manners" puppy class which went really well. I knew she was pretty laid back, but tonight was amazing. I say that because half of the dogs present were freaking out about being there and she was still mellow for most of the hour long class. She also managed to pay enough attention to learn some stuff despite it being an incredibly distracting environment. I am think the class will be good experience for us both. (Did I mention that I have not been part of raising a puppy in over a decade?)

The experience of interacting with the folks at NW Family Dog was a pleasure. They are not interested in being in a rush. The staff feel like burners which I mean as a huge compliment. I never asked if they were, but wow do they just seem like people I would want to run into on the playa. They really care that you grok the baggage the dogs in their shelter bring to the table (assuming they know it). While waiting to meet a pup (which is pretty common since their facility is small) I watched their staff actively talk 3 people out of dogs that were not, in their opinion, a good match. I just cannot say enough good stuff about them.
